Singapore’s Changi Airport has come full circle as the passenger in 2024 has returned to near-pandemic levels, it said Wednesday (Jan. 22).
The airport treated 67. 7 million passengers in 2024-99. 1% of the passenger recorded in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 2024 figures constitute a year-on-year increase of 14. 8%.
Around 366,000 flights took off or landed at Changi Airport in 2024, up 11. 5% from 2023.
Visitor arrivals to Singapore had fallen by the last 2. 7 million in 2020, the lowest in just 4 decades, due to unprecedented global travel restrictions and border closures from the Covid-19 pandemic, the Straits Times reported in 2021.
Amid the 366,000 take-off or touchdown flights in Singapore last year, 8 new passenger airlines – Aero Dili, AirAsia Cambodia, Air Canada, Air Japan, Loong Air, Peach Aviation, Tianjin Airlines and West Air, added last year.
This establishes 11 new passenger city connections to Singapore, connecting travelers here in Broome, Brussels, Guiyang, Kerjati, Lhasa, Linyi, Malacca, Phu Quoc, Quanzhou, Vancouver and Wenzhou.
Other destinations will come online this year, adding March’s Labuan Bajo and June’s Vienna, according to the group.
CAG Chief Executive Yam Kum Weng said the new passenger airlines had been “instrumental” in Changi’s growth.
“Looking ahead, we are positive about the year of passenger traffic growth,” he added.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said he is “confident that Changi will continue this strong expansion momentum” and that traffic volumes will exceed pre-pandemic titles this year.
“The strong recovery of our air hub is only imaginable because of the strong commitment and contributions of our aviation staff and air partners,” Minister Chee said.
“I am proud that our aviation sector is more united, resilient and in a position for the future. “
In 2024, Changi Airport ranked the fourth-busiest foreign airport in terms of air seat capacity according to knowledge published through OAG Aviation, the Straits Times reported on Jan. 16.
With 41. 5 million seats in total, the airport missed Incheon International Airport for the third spot in South Korea, which saw 41. 6 million passengers.
Britain’s Heathrow Airport in the position at the moment with 48. 4 million, while the UAE’s Dubai International Airport took the most sensitive spot with 60. 2 million seats in total.
