CDW-G, Intel Corporation, LEGO® Education and the first book launch initiative to help Title 1 students overcome the impact of COVID-19

Through this initiative, these corporations combine to help schools create more equitable learning environments and help academics during the pandemic and beyond.

WASHINGTON, August 11, 2020 / PRNewswire / – Last July, First Book published the effects of a national educator survey showing that 40% of young people in need in the United States do not have a reliable Internet connection and that nearly 40% do not have access to functional devices. The closure of schools in March exacerbated an existing crisis in the schooling of deficient youth, millions of whom do not have access to allow virtual learning. To address the disruptions of the virtual division aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic, CDW-G, Intel Corporation and LEGO® Education and LEGO Foundation worked with First Book to build the Creating Learning Connections initiative. This initiative provides learning responses designed to boost education at this critical time by supporting thousands of academics and families in pandemic-affected Title I schools in the United States. Students will get essential learning resources at home and in the classroom, adding Internet connectivity, generation devices, and STEAM hands-on learning responses.

School districts and teachers have mobilized incredibly to help their students this time, leaving young people without devices or connectivity. It’s excluding them from the school system. We are very grateful for the commitment and leadership of Intel Corporation, LEGO Education, LEGO Foundation and CDW-G to help us close the virtual gap for thousands of young people in need across the country.”

Through this initiative, Intel and CDW-G are offering a total of $5 million in computers, software, configuration facilities, and non-public virtual learning resources. They also provide $4,000 in allocations to each assigned district to host Internet connectivity for young people in need. In addition, the LEGO Foundation is donating $2 million in LEGO Education responses to help learn STEAM at home and at school. Districts will be asked to decide between 3 age-appropriate responses to help learn STEAM for grades 2-8: LEGO Education SPIKE Prime, LEGO Education Simple Machines, and LEGO Education Simple – Motorized Machines.

Under the grant, underned families in 17 states will get support, with approximately 15,000 devices and 7,500 LEGO Education responses delivered to forty-five school districts.

The application era ran from May 19 to June 5 and 128 school districts were filed. Through a multi-step review process, it was decided that forty-five school districts across the country would get grants in the fall. Schools that have not decided to get the grant will get $5,000 from Intel to use in the first e-book market to purchase new e-books and educational resources for their students.
