Sameh Makki’s soup kitchen is only a hundred meters from the market, but it can take two hours to traverse the war-torn streets of Sudan, under a hail of bullets. The 43-year-old, his circle of family members and local volunteers risked everything to get materials to feed some 150 families caught in the crossfire between the army and paramilitaries. “The only thing that is discussed is that the others eat. “Good things save lives”

The United Nations is launching “Verified,” an initiative to fight the developing scourge of COVID-19 data by expanding the volume and scope of reliable and accurate data. Verified, led through the United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC), will provide data on 3 themes: science – to save lives; solidarity – to promote local and global cooperation; and responses, to advocate for affected populations. It will also announce recovery plans that address the climate crisis and address the root causes of poverty, inequality and hunger.
