JOHANNESBURG – The World Health Organization has suggested that African governments accelerate the reopening of schools, saying that young people on the continent will suffer prolonged closures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO officials have warned that poor nutrition, stress, increased exposure to violence and exploitation, and teenage pregnancies are among the disorders faced by non-school academics in sub-Saharan Africa. Only six African countries have fully opened schools, according to a survey conducted in 39 countries through WHO and UNICEF. Many governments have closed schools as part of measures to restrict coronavirus transmission. Some reopened and had to close when cases of viruses arose in schools.
