In 1888, Brazil, with a predominantly black and mestizo or mulatto population, was the last country in the Western Hemisphere to abolish slavery. During more than three hundred years of slavery in America, the country was the largest importer of African slaves, bringing seven times as many African slaves into the country as in the United States.
