Bahrain pulls out of UN human rights framework elections after criticism

Bahrain will no longer stand for election for the UN’s most sensible human rights framework later this month, a UN online page showed, after a complaint drew attention to alleged human rights violations. A U. N. website showed Bahrain withdrew its candidacy on Sept. 26 to run for a three-year position at the Geneva-based framework, without giving details. A Bahraini government spokesman told Reuters that the postponement of the Persian Gulf state’s candidacy “is the result of an ongoing consultation with its geographic group,” describing it as popular practice.

Unopposed Asian leader for re-election

FIFA Vice President Sheik Salman of Bahrain will be re-elected unopposed as president of the Asian Football Confederation. The president of the Saudi football federation is also a candidate to incorporate Sheik Salman and other Asian colleagues on FIFA’s board of directors. The 47-nation AFC on Tuesday released its list of candidates for its next electoral assembly in Bahrain in February. Seven countries, plus Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have fielded candidates for five seats on the FIFA Council, contested only among men. Five countries compete for a seat for women.
