SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — Authorities are searching for at least five other people involved in an armed robbery Friday at the San Luis Cardinals’ complex in the Dominican Republic.
Dominican Republic police spokesman Diego Pesqueira told The Associated Press that the suspects bound and gagged a security guard and stole watches, rings, necklaces and other items from athletes and staff.
Pesqueira said the suspects used the guard’s lanyards to tie his wrists and ankles. No one was injured and no shots were fired, he said.
A Cardinals agent said baseball equipment was also stolen. Players and staff at the complex were shocked, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said.
“It’s scary in so many ways,” Mozeliak said in the statement. The team will promptly reconsider its protection at the complex, he said.
Pesqueira said he doesn’t have any main points about all the stolen pieces or their overall value, as police are waiting for the baseball academy to provide a list of everything stolen.
The suspects have been identified, Pesqueira said.
