Canadian researchers said Monday that they were investigating a popular superfood, acai berry, as a remedy to avoid the most severe symptoms of COVID-19.
Previous studies have shown that berry extract can act as an inflammation inhibitor, which, according to doctors, can prevent the severe inflammatory reaction caused by coronavirus.
Scientists at the University of Toronto, Michael Farkouh and Ana Andreazza, who have studied the effect of the bay on inflammatory responses for about five years, are reading how it can be used for COVID-19.
“It’s a long way, ” said Farkouh to the AFP. But acai berries are reasonable and readily available to everyone, as well as safe, so it’s worth a try.
The couple recruited about 580 patients who underwent coronavirus tests in Canada and Brazil, where berry is grown.
Half took doses of extract while the rest gained placebos.
The hope is that early intervention with acai can save you some of the worst symptoms of the disease, which can lead to hospitalization and death, Farkouh said.
He explained that the particular extract points to the same NLRP3 pathway as the coronavirus, which, when activated, triggers the body’s reaction to combat infection and stress.
The effects of 30 days are expected to be published until the end of 2020.
