Canadian crews and jets participate in NATO’s Romanian Air Task Force (ATF-R), which conducts 24-hour air patrols along the military alliance’s eastern flank. RCAF Major General Iain Huddleston notes that the existing rotation marks the seventh time Canadian aircrews have been deployed to Romania since 2014.
“This year is naturally different, in the sense that the risk is even more palpable,” Huddleston notes, referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has land and sea borders with Romania.
“We are proud to work with and support our Romanian counterparts, who appreciate our contribution to their aerial surveillance activities at a time of emerging tensions similar to the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Huddleston added.
Most of the aircraft and worker corps sent across Canada came from the RCAF’s 425th Tactical Fighter Squadron founded in Bagotville, Quebec, according to DND.
