Canadian Evacuee Describes Adventure from Gaza to Egypt

A woman who was among the first organization of Canadians evacuated from Gaza amid the war between Israel and Hamas says she is incredibly relieved to have managed to leave the besieged Palestinian enclave with her two children.

Rana Nassrawi, who is currently staying at a hotel in Cairo, says she and her children will return home to Mississauga, Ontario, in a day.

Nassrawi was among 75 other people connected to Canada who were able to leave Gaza on Tuesday through Rafah’s southern crossing with Egypt, the only crossing for foreign nationals, as the war entered its second month.

She says the Canadian government was on the Egyptian side of the border to greet her and her children and facilitated her eight-hour bus ride to Cairo from the Rafah border crossing.

Nassrawi says they arrived at her Cairo hotel early this morning and promptly burst into tears as she recalled what she had witnessed in Gaza.

The 43-year-old woman from Gaza visited her elderly parents for the first time in two decades when the war broke out.

She says her husband, who lives in Ontario, booked a flight house for her and her children when they left Gaza.
