The Adult Vaccine Alliance is advocating for greater access to vaccines for adults in Canada: getting fit and saving lives.
TORONTO, Nov. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Adult Vaccine Alliance (AVA) is pleased to announce its official launch, a continuation of existing efforts to access adult vaccines in Canada. Bringing together frontline physical care workers, academics and industry partners, pharmaceutical leaders, public fitness experts, and advocacy groups and patients, AVA is committed to advocating for all adult vaccines advised through the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) to be made publicly funded uniformly across all provinces and territories in Canada.
Canada faces significantly challenging situations in adult immunization, with a lower vaccination rate than pediatric vaccines and greater inequalities in access. 1 Many of the vaccines recommended through NACI for adults (e. g. , shingles vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine) do not consistently receive public funding across Canada. 2,3 In addition, awareness of the importance of adult vaccines is lower than that of pediatric vaccines. 4
“Ensuring a healthier Canada means ensuring that all adults in Canada have equitable access to vaccines,” said Dr. Gregory Taylor, co-chair of the AVA. “Our vision is to see a Canada where each and every adult can seamlessly access vaccines through evidence-based experts at no or low cost. Our project is to advocate for increased funding, increased public awareness, and increased access to vaccines for adults.
A recent survey conducted by 19 to Zero5 and the University of Toronto showed that 73% of respondents across Canada felt that NACI-recommended vaccines should be publicly funded. 6 The effects also showed that more than 71% of respondents felt that paying their out-of-pocket amount for their vaccines plays a central role in their decision-making process.
“The desire to reinvigorate the immunization regimen in the wake of COVID-19 demands that we engage fitness professionals, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and the public in our project for the fitness of others no matter where they live in Canada,” said Dr. Schulz. . Jia Hu, Co-Chair of AVA. ” AVA will work collaboratively with key stakeholders to support investment in and access to NACI-recommended vaccines.
AVA was created following an April 2023 assembly in Ottawa that included industry partners, leading academics, pharmaceutical leaders, public fitness experts, as well as advocacy teams and patients who highlighted the need for new approaches to adult vaccine financing, access, and adoption in Canada.
