OTTAWA, CANADA — Canada said Saturday it will require travelers arriving from China to show a negative COVID-19 test, following measures by the United States and others.
Given the immediate situation of coronavirus infections in China, Canada will require travelers boarding flights from China to provide a negative COVID check taken no later than two days prior to departure with their boarding pass, according to a statement.
Ottawa said the move “in reaction to the COVID-19 outbreak in the People’s Republic of China and given the limited epidemiological knowledge and viral genomic sequences that are in those cases. “
The rule will take effect on January five and will be reevaluated after 30 days.
After nearly three years, China said it would lift strict restrictions on departures next week, despite rising cases and amid considerations about the accuracy of its data reports.
The Canadian government said it would also remove sewage from all foreign flights landing in Toronto or Vancouver to monitor new variants.
