“Redesivir is the first drug Health Canada has legal for the COVID-19 remedy,” the Department of Health said.
At least two primary U.S. studies have shown that remdesivir can remain in the hospital for the duration of the hospital for patients with COVID-19.
Washington legalized the emergency use of the drug, which originally intended to treat Ebola on May 1, followed by several Asian countries, including Japan and South Korea.
Canada said Tuesday that it can be used in COVID-19 patients with pneumonia who want additional oxygen to breathe.
The doses used in Canada will be manufactured through a unit of Gilead Sciences, the US pharmaceutical company that developed the drug.
In early July, the European Commission authorised the use of remdesivir to treat coronavirus.
