The first official treatment for COVID-19 has arrived in Canada.
Health Canada gave the green light to Canadian manufacturer Gilead Sciences Inc. to treat patients with the antiviral drug re-ivir, which is already used under emergency or conditional authorization to combat the fatal virus in other countries, adding Japan, Australia, Singapore and the United States.
The antiviral drug is actually already being administered intravenously to patients with COVID-19 as a component of a special access program in Canada; however, the country’s Public Health Agency will now organize a remedy for any Canadian with serious symptoms such as pneumonia. or those who have shortness of breath, as long as they are adults or adolescents over the age of 12 and weigh at least 40 kg (88 lbs).
Originally used in the fight against Ebola, remdesivir works by inhibiting the virus itself, shortening the patient’s recovery time and strengthening the immune formula as some other possible remedies for COVID-19.
Health Canada approved a six-week accelerated review of the drug that demonstrates that its benefits outweigh its risks and says it will largely monitor the administration of the remedy.
Gilead Sciences, whose motto is not “Blessed be the fruit”, thank God, has an obligation to keep Health Canada informed of any serious reaction to the drug and to continue to report on pregnancy safety, clinical knowledge and foreign remedy regulations.
Treatment will be administered at the fitness facilities.
