TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Canada went out to fish for a decisive victory Monday in the CONCACAF U-20 men’s soccer championship, but despite a 2-2 draw, it ended up talking about the big one that eluded it.
Canada let slip two one-goal advantages against the United States, but still received a big point in its four-team organization that includes Cuba and St. Kitts and Nevis.
Lowell Wright of Canada opened the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute, but Jack McGlynn equalized in the 53rd minute. Canada took a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute when Michael Halliday credited an opposite American goal to his side. That lead lasted just 3 minutes when Cade Cowell scored for the United States.
The United States led Canada 18-5 and had the ball 62% of the time.
Cuba, from the group, beat St. Kitts and Nevis 4-0.
Canada lately ranks third in the organization with one point, Cuba with six problems, the United States has 4 problems and is ahead of Saint Kitts and Nevis with 0 problems. Today’s effects mean Canada will move from the organization to the CONCACAF knockout stages with a win or a draw against St. Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday.
Of the remaining 20 nations in the CONCACAF U-20 Men’s Soccer Championship, the smartest 4 nations will qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2023, while the two smartest nations will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
