Let’s start with an update on the coronavirus crisis, which has affected the state. California experienced two of the first Covid-19 deaths in the United States. It has had more cases than any other state in the country and the pandemic shows few signs of slowing down.

Here’s the latest:

In a long-sought-after move by advocates, California has stepped up its efforts to determine whether coronavirus affects people in L.G.T.B.Q. others at disproportionate rates.

State public fitness officials announced Tuesday that laboratories and fitness care would be required to collect and inform the state of the knowledge that patients voluntarily disclose about their gender identity and sexual orientation, in addition to their age and ethnicity.

“Comprehensive knowledge is to address physical fitness inequalities and greater design of life-saving public physical fitness interventions,” Dr. Sonia Angell, the state’s head of public fitness, said in a statement.

The requirement applies not only to patients with Covid-19, but also to those with other mandatory reporting diseases.

Providers should already report race and ethnicity, although knowledge is incomplete. Depending on the state, data on the race and ethnicity of patients are absent in 36% of coronavirus cases.
