With an average of 92 deaths per million inhabitants, Romania has the road fatality rate of the European Union (EU) in 2021 according to the latest figures published by the European Commission (EC) on 17th October. Bulgaria currently occupies the position in the ranking with an indicator of 81 consistent deaths per million inhabitants.
In 2021, the road fatality rate in Bulgaria is 21% higher than last year, but 11% lower than in 2019.
The EU’s average of forty-five road deaths is consistent with one million inhabitants last year, with the safest roads in Sweden (20 deaths/million) and Denmark (22/million).
According to the same source, around 19,900 more people died on EU roads last year, 6% more than in 2020. But this came after an “unprecedented annual decline of 17% between 2019 and 2020. “
“The picture over the past two years has been strongly influenced by traffic levels in each country, which were particularly low in the pandemic. For some Member States, the backlog of road deaths since the closure has been so significant that it demands: in-depth investigation and urgent action,” the Commission explained.
The EC also said initial figures for the first seven months of 2022 showed an increase in road fatalities, by more than 10% on average compared to 2021. It also stated that in some Member States there was a particularly high increase without naming them. . .
“The estimate of road deaths across the EU in 2022 to date remains lower than in 2019 before the pandemic, although monthly fluctuations make it difficult to forecast as it should be for the whole year. The current replacement rate is inadequate to meet the EU’s target of halving the number of deaths by 2030,” the EC said. “To this end, the Commission is working intensively with Member States to ensure that they implement a comprehensive and safe systemic technique, widely accepted as the most productive way to tackle road protection, as a component of their national road protection methods for the decade to 2030. “
The figures were published as part of the Road Safety Excellence Awards, which recognise the contribution of the European Road Safety Charter network to the usual purpose of road safety in Europe.
