President Muhammadu Buhari expressed Nigeria’s commitment to achieving inclusive and sustainable goals for the country.
The President spoke in New York on the high-level strategic occasion to mark the official launch of Nigeria’s report on the Integrated National Financing Framework for Sustainable Development (NIFF) on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly.
Underscoring the importance placed through existing management to achieve the purpose, President Buhari said: “It is pertinent to affirm that achieving inclusive, comprehensive and sustainable progression is a cardinal purpose of our management.
“To this end, the Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a series of ambitious programmes to advance the SDGs in Nigeria.
“The Office of the Principal Special Assistant to the President on the SDGs has continued to provide technical leadership in SDG operations at all levels of government in Nigeria. “
He said he was delighted that the process leading up to NIFF that began in 2020 nevertheless crystallized into Friday’s memorable event.
“Today’s occasion marks the end of a long procedure that began in 2020, when the steering committee and lead implementing organization of Nigeria’s Integrated Country Financing Framework were inaugurated. “
The Integrated Country Finance Framework has evolved to expand a much-needed sustainable financing plan for Nigeria to meet our commitment to the SDGs and our national aspirations,” he said.
President Buhari explained that all the country’s progress plans and systems have been aligned with the SDGs and are in a position to move the economy forward despite the demanding situations facing the country.
“Despite the demanding situations caused by the sharp drop in crude oil costs and the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigeria has remained resolute in our genuine preference for expanding our economy.
“The Economic Growth and Recovery Plan 2017-2020; the 2020 Economic Sustainability Plan; the National Strategy for Poverty Reduction and Growth 2021; and the National Development Plan 2021-2025 are aligned with the SDGs.
“It is in line with this commitment and with a focus on the National Development Plan (2021-2025) that the Federal Government of Nigeria, with the help of the United Nations Development Programme, has followed INFF as a tool for the SDGs. Financing without expanding public debt and contingent liabilities to negative degrees for economic sustainability.
By bringing together Nigerians, the foreign network and progression partners of this new progression, the President is confident in stakeholders for its prompt implementation.
“For Nigeria and, indeed, for Africa as a whole, achieving the SDGs will mean eliminating poverty and hunger, safeguarding our ecosystem and planet, and ensuring that our people live in peace and prosperity until 2030. “
Earlier in her remarks, the President’s Senior Special Assistant for the Sustainable Development Goals, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said the United Nations had commended the Nigerian government for implementing Nigeria’s action plans, putting Nigeria ahead of many countries.
He added that in August, Nigeria was the “first country in the South to have completed an independent evaluation of SDG-3 on ‘fitness and well-being for all’ and SDG-4 on ‘quality and inclusion’. Education and lifelong learning for all.
Orelope-Adefulire said the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on the SDGs has collaborated with the National Bureau of Statistics to track the progress of 230 key functionality signals annually, attributing the successes to President Buhari’s unwavering support.
The presidential aide explained that she is also running with some state governors to “integrate the Sustainable Development Goals into their policies, systems and budgets,” hoping that before the end of the current administration, all states will be covered.
