Brazil’s president-elect burst into tears when he promised to alleviate Brazil’s hunger problem.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke about his great project as the country’s leader after he narrowly managed to oust Jair Bolsonaro after a term without marrying.
“If in the time that my mandate ends, each and every one of the Brazilians have breakfast, lunch and dinner, I will have fulfilled once again the mission of my life,” he said before choking.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the Americas, 61. 3 million Brazilians are or severely food insecure, corresponding to 28. 9% of the total population.
Lula justified his tears by saying that “I never imagined that hunger would return to Brazil. “
“When I left the presidency, I imagine that in 10 years Brazil would be at the same level as France, or England, which would have evolved from the point of view of social conquests. “
Lula’s first two terms as president, between 2003 and 2010, were characterized by his Zero Hunger (Fome Zero) program, which made wonderful progress in reducing the country’s levels of extreme poverty.
Economic stagnation and the covid pandemic reversed some of those gains, and hunger was again a key theme of the crusade ahead of the October elections.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run through a handful of billionaires, most of whom are alive and all have strong political loyalties and monetary motivations.
Our project is to hold tough people accountable. It is that loose means are allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, misdeeds and abuse of power. But we can’t do it without you.
