Brazilian president says ‘almost contagion’ coronavirus

Fresh from an episode of COVID-19, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said Friday that almost everyone would probably end up contracting the new coronavirus, urging Brazilians to “face it” and saying there is nothing to fear.

The far-right leader’s most recent attempt to minimize the pandemic came when Brazil approached the bleak level of another 100,000 people killed by the virus, the current number of others in the world, after the United States.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro, who has been quarantined for three weeks with a case of coronavirus, cited his own case as an example.

“I’m part of the high-risk group,” the 65-year-old president on a stopover in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul told the press.

“I knew I was going to get it one day, because I think, unfortunately, almost everyone here is going to get it one day. What are you afraid of? Face it,” he says.

“I regret the dead. But other people die every day, of many things. That’s life.”

Bolsonaro criticized for its handling of the pandemic as it grew in Brazil, the country with the highest number of instances and deaths in the world at the time: more than 2.6 million and 92,000, respectively.

Bolsonaro, who compared the virus to a “small flu,” fought home maintenance measures to engage it and mocked social distance patterns, going to the streets of Brasilia to exchange handshakes and hugs with supporters.

He tested the virus on July 7 after having a fever and spent three weeks in solitary confinement at the presidential palace.

On Thursday, on his first public occasion since his illness, he greeted a crowd of supporters in the northeastern state of Piauí, and his mask was filled with cheers.

On the same day, the president announced that his wife had tested positive for the virus.

Bolsonaro later revealed that he felt bad in his back and that he was taking antibiotics for an infection he called “mouldy lungs” caused by inactivity at age 40.

Bolsonaro argues that domestic measures unnecessarily damage the economy.

Instead, he recommends hydroxychloroquine as a remedy for the virus and took it himself when it became infected, even though studies seem to indicate that it has no merit to oppose COVID-19.
