Brazil’s national drug authority, Anvisa, on Wednesday (March 30) granted emergency authorization to Paxlovid, a therapeutic drug against COVID-19, a combination of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. The product is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Wyeth.
The drug is indicated for adults who test positive and do not need oxygen and are at risk of developing a severe case of the disease. Its main objective is to prevent the deterioration of the physical prestige of inflamed people.
The drug is meant for individual oral use, but not recommended for patients aged under 18. It is also not indicated for pregnant women or those intending to become pregnant during treatment.
The director of Anvisa, Meiruze Souza Freitas, said that the benefits of marketing the drug outweigh the risks. The early approval of products to treat COVID-19, he added, is in line with guaranteeing the possibilities of a remedy against the disease, given the pandemic scenario in Brazil.
“With the pandemic, we are facing unprecedented challenges. Closing this hole is a public health priority. The availability of medicines remains insufficient for a number of reasons: high prices, poor purchasing and distribution conditions, questionable product quality and inadequate prescriptions,” said Meiruze Freitas.
According to Helaine Capucho, Head of Medicines Surveillance, “it has been requested that contraindications for concomitant use with apalutamide be included in the package leaflet. “
It also indexed the issues included in the threat control plan as well as the package insert, such as the stipulation that a letter be sent to health care professionals requesting recommendations related to the use of Paxlovid in mixture with other medications and any mandatory care.
In addition, the pharmaceutical company should provide information on the use of the product in Brazil in order to monitor its application and possible adverse events.
