SAO PAULO (AP) – Brazilian defender Gabriel Menino tested COVID-19 and will miss the next World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Uruguay, the Brazilian football confederation announced Thursday.
The 20-year-old Palmeiras player had first tested negative for coronavirus on Monday.
Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said at a news convention that Menino was asymptomatic and that all other team members had tested negative.
“It’s already remote and you’ll be freed from your duties right now,” Lasmar said. “All protective measures are taken. We will make a new test run before our heading to Uruguay.
Brazil won its first two matches in the World Cup qualifying campaign, will face Venezuela in Sao Paulo on Friday and then Uruguay on Tuesday.
Coach Tite has already lost defender Eder Milito to COVID-19 by matches.
