Brazil moves towards a deal with China to boost coffee exports

Brazil’s Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, signed an agreement with China on Wednesday (June 5) to potentially increase the country’s coffee exports worth $500 million.

During his stay in the Asian country, Alckmin signed memorandums of understanding to promote Brazilian coffee with China’s largest coffee chain, Luckin Coffee, which has more than 16,000 points of sale and is the largest importer of Brazilian coffee in China.

The agreement signed supplies for the acquisition of some 120,000 tons of Brazilian coffee through the chain, for a total amount of about 500 million dollars. To put this into perspective, Brazilian coffee exports for the total of 2023 amounted to 280 million dollars.

The Chinese pharmaceutical company also announced that it had signed an agreement with the Brazilian Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) to cooperate in the development and progression of vaccines to combat health crises.

“I myself won the Coronavac vaccine,” the vice president said, referring to the COVID-19 vaccine stockpiled by thousands of Brazilians. “Science benefits the world and we will have to continue to progress. We want to collaborate and I appreciate Sinovac’s commitment to make an investment in Brazil,” he noted.

Of this total, R$325,000 corresponds to the full payment of the country’s normal contribution to the UN. This is the first time in the last decade that Brazil has made its contribution to the United Nations in the first part of the year.
