Brazil buys another 54 mi doses of vaccine against COVID-19

Brazil’s Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday (Feb. 16) that it had purchased 54 million more doses of the CoronaVac coronavirus vaccine, after signing a new agreement with the Butantan Institute, the São Paulo-based laboratory that is developing the vaccine in collaboration with Chinese laboratory Sinovac.

Taking into account the 46 million doses already covered through previous agreements, about 100 million vaccines are expected to be distributed to states through September.

Also this week, the ministry released receipt dates for all vaccines or in the process of being Arrayed.

By December, the ministry said, Brazil will get 42. 5 million doses of the vaccine supplied through the Covax Facility consortium, coordinated through the World Health Organization, which functions as a distribution center for vaccines abroad. The first batch will include 10 million doses of the Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine and will be delivered until June. It depends on the country to which provider you should give the additional doses.

Also by the end of this year, Brazil will have made 222.4 million doses of the Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine against COVID-19 available. Under the schedule, half of this total will be distributed by June. The first doses started arriving in January. The country is also receiving shipments of the active pharmaceutical ingredient to produce the inoculation. The technology required for the production of the active pharmaceutical ingredient incorporated by Rio de Janeiro’s Oswaldo Cruz Foundation should enable the remaining 110 million doses to be available in the second half of 2021.

The Ministry of Health is expected to sign contracts in the coming days for the import of the Sputnik V vaccine from the Russian Institute Gamaleya União Química, the laboratory that produces the vaccine in Brazil. From March to May, Brazil is expected to obtain ten million doses of vaccine. Once the generation of active pharmaceutical elements is integrated, União Química will generate 8 million doses per month in Brazil.

The ministry plans to procure another 20 million doses from India’s Covax/Bharat Biotech, also between March and May, from Precisa Medicinas.

Given their good luck with Brazilian audiences, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney, and HBO Max have invested heavily in Brazilian productions.
