Boucherville day camp in the latest COVID-19 outbreak in Montérégie

A day camp on Montreal’s south coast saw an explosion of COVID-19 cases, making it the fifth such camp in the region to see cases of the new coronavirus this summer.

“Lately there are 27 cases among young people and staff. The outbreak began on July 20,” Martine Lesage, CISSS Montérégie-Center spokesman, told him in a French-speaking interview in an email to Global News.

Lesage said that all the youth who had attended the camp between 13 and 21 July had been informed of the outbreak in an email.

Until last week, the fitness government had argued that the previous four outbreaks at Montérégie day camps had been limited to two cases each.

Now, after 27 cases shown in Charlot l’Escargot, CISSS has met “people who have been in contact with cases” and alerted them to their increased risk of contracting the virus.

Lesage declined to say how many of those contacts had been identified, but added: “These contacts would possibly have resulted in secondary cases, which can also lead to a higher number of cases. The exact number is not yet known.”

The camp is now closed until 7 August, a resolution taken jointly by CISSS and the administrators of the day camp.
