Boston plans to identify 11 wastewater testing sites across the city to monitor spikes in the COVID-19 virus.
The head of the Boston Public Health Commission said the city is partnering with vendors to create the sites as COVID-19 degrees in the region’s wastewater have begun to rise.
Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Boston’s public fitness commissioner, said the city will measure water from the sites weekly. Ojikutu said the tests will also monitor the city for new variants of the disease.
Ojikutu made the comments at a Boston City Council assembly Monday to the Boston Globe.
The city is lately receiving cumulative information from Boston and 22 other nearby locations. City health officials hope Boston’s testing sites will realize what’s happening at the community level.
The town is attracting $3. 9 million in federal investment to pay for the project.
Coronavirus levels in eastern Massachusetts wastewater have risen in weeks.
Monitoring virus levels in waste can serve as an early cautionary signal, detecting changes even before other people can be assessed and effects reported to public health officials.
