Borealis Receives FDA Approval for Borcycle™ M Post-Consumer Recycled Plastics in Food-Grade Packaging

(BRIEF) Borealis has won letters of no objection (NOL) from the Committee on Food and Agriculture

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, March 28, 2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Borealis, an Austrian chemical company active in the polyolefins sector and a European leader in the recycling of polyolefins, critical chemicals and fertilizers, will announce that it has obtained the No Objection Letters (NOL) from the Committee on Food and Agriculture

Borcycle M is Borealis’ transformative mechanical recycling generation that breathes new life into post-consumer plastic waste in an energy-efficient matrix. The FDA’s NOLs pave the way for the use of Borcycle M-derived fabrics in a wide variety of difficult and delicate applications in addition to cosmetics. and non-public care, as well as food contact.

The FDA has issued two NOLs that allow the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) Borcycle M PCR up to one hundred percent in safe dry food contact applications. In addition, those recycled fabrics can account for up to 10% of dry food packaging with oil on the surface and rainy bakery products. FDA NOLs are applicable from January 2024 for recycled HDPE and from February 2024 for recycled PP.

This represents a further step in Borealis’ EverMinds™ ambition to drive action on plastics circularity. By allowing a wider diversity of products to be made from recycled plastics, the FDA’s NOLs will reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in incineration and landfills. In addition to minimizing reliance on virgin fabrics, Borealis will also meet the growing demand for high-quality recycled fabrics suitable for delicate and delicate applications.

“Our consumers will expand the use of value-added recycled plastics within their portfolios. Combined with all of Borealis’ other sustainable offerings, this FDA approval of selected grades from our Borcycle M portfolio for food grade programs will help them achieve their sustainability goals and bring us all closer to a fully circular economy for plastics,” says Jonatas Melo, Borealis Vice President for Performance Materials.

Borealis is now in a position to move forward with the progression of the determined food packaging programs from recycled HDPE and PP.

“This marks a critical milestone for Borealis, helping us in our quest to reinvent the essentials for sustainable living,” said Mirjam Mayer, Vice President of Circular Economy Solutions at Borealis.

FDA NOLs apply in the United States of America, as well as in other regions covered by FDA governance. In the EU, FDA clearance will facilitate discussions about the use of those fabrics in high-end, touch-sensitive applications such as cosmetics and non-textiles. – Customer service packaging.
