(BRIEF) Borealis and the AKVA Group have collaborated to introduce a revolutionary innovation in sustainable aquaculture: the world’s first working boat hull made from renewable plastic. Using Borealis’ diversity of Bornewables™ renewable polyolefins, the AKVA Group’s iconic Polarcirkel series now comes at a particularly discounted price. carbon footprint while maintaining exceptional standards of functionality. The hull, made of Borealis BorSafe™ HE3490-LS-HW with 90% renewable content, represents a step towards circularity in marine technology. This milestone reflects a shared commitment to drive progress towards a circular economy. , with plans to expand the partnership to cover more sustainable workboat parts and floating aquaculture constructions. The initiative aligns with a broader industry shift towards renewable materials, highlighting a pivotal moment in the pursuit of environmentally friendly aquaculture practices.
(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, March 27, 2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Borealis and AKVA Group are pleased to announce a breakthrough in sustainable aquaculture: the hull of a workboat built from renewable plastic. The ship will be unveiled in Mo i Rana, Norway, in spring 2024, marking a step towards circularity in marine technology.
Borealis is one of the world’s leading providers of complex and sustainable polyolefin solutions. The AKVA Group is the world’s leading supplier of generation to the aquaculture industry.
The iconic Polarcirkel™ series is known for its practical design, exceptional reliability, and unmatched safety. Used in a wide variety of industries, including fish farming, oil and gas, rescue, defense, Arctic tours and recreational boating, these vessels can face some of the harshest situations on the planet, from -40°C in the Arctic regions to 55°C in the tropics.
Thanks to Borealis’ Bornewables™ portfolio of renewable polyolefins, the AKVA Group is now able to offer vessels with a particularly low carbon footprint. Derived from renewable resources such as used cooking oil, Bornewables will offer the same functionality as virgin plastics, but decoupled from raw fossil-based plastics.
The housing is made of Borealis BorSafe™ HE3490-LS-HW quality, which is made up of 90% renewable content based on a mass balance approach. For every kilogram of polyolefin produced, this quality yields an estimated relief of 1. 9 kg. of CO2 equivalent emissions compared to a fossil equivalent. [1]
The AKVA Group has also taken another step forward in sustainability by transporting fabrics to Mo i Rana through exercises to minimise the carbon footprint of transport.
These measures constitute a transparent and measurable step towards reducing climate impact and achieving a circular economy. In the near future, the partnership between Borealis and the AKVA Group is expected to expand to cover a wider diversity of workboat parts, as well as floating structures for aquaculture made from pipelines.
“The aquaculture industry is poised for a circular transformation and we are excited to lead the pace with the help of Borealis. Our first priority will be the protection of other people on board our ships, and it is remarkable that this can now only be achieved with a much lower carbon footprint,” says Freddy Bakken Braseth, Managing Director of the AKVA Group Department at Mo. I Rana.
“We are committed to helping our consumers move away from classic raw fabrics and embrace renewable fabrics,” said John Webster, global commercial director of infrastructure at Borealis. “The use of Bornewables in Polarcirkel confirms that high performance criteria can be met in a sustainable way. This resolution is an important step forward in our EverMinds project to drive the transformation towards a circular economy. In this way, we are fully implementing the reinvention of the elements of sustainable living.

(PE) BornewablesTM. . The study compares the potential footprint of Bornewables fabrics produced at sites in Sweden, Finland and Belgium employing steam cracking and propane dehydrogenation processes, with that of equivalent polyolefins derived from fossil feedstocks at the sites.
With consumers in more than 120 countries and headquartered in Vienna, Austria, Borealis employs approximately 6,000 people. In 2023, we generated a profit of €216 million. OMV, the integrated energy, fuels and raw materials, chemicals and textiles company headquartered in Vienna, Austria, owns 75% of our shares. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), owns the remaining 25%.
