LA PAZ, Bolivia – A Bolivian court on Monday rejected a court appeal through former President Evo Morales, calling it ineligible for a Senate seat in the new October elections after a vote overturned last year.

Morales ran for the Senate for his Movement for Socialism party because he does not meet the residency requirements, Judge Alfredo Jaimes told the local media.

Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous president, was on the force for 14 years before resigning last year when a contested election sparked protests. Jeanine has been acting president since Morales last November.

The former president, now living in exile in Argentina, was unable to run for president in the upcoming general election, originally scheduled for May, but postponed until October 18 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The court’s ruling confirms a prior impasse in Morales through the Bolivian electoral court in February and will be appealed.
