LA PAZ – A Bolivian court on Monday rejected a court appeal through former President Evo Morales, calling it ineligible for a Senate seat in the new October elections after a vote overturned last year.
Morales ran for the Senate for his Movement for Socialism (MAS) party because he does not meet the residency requirements, Judge Alfredo Jaimes told the local media.
The former president, now living in exile in Argentina, resigned last year after a disputed election sparked protests. General elections are scheduled for October 18 after being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Court ruling confirms past blockade of Morales’ candidacy through Bolivian electoral court in February and will be appealed (report via Daniel Ramos; written through Cassandra Garrison; edited through Sandra Maler)
