NEW YORK (AP) — U. S. Davis Cup captain Mardy Fish will miss organization-level games in Glasgow, Scotland, next week due to COVID-19, and Bob Bryan will update the interim captain.
“I’m disgusted that I can’t be there after putting a bunch of paints on this team and looking to win for America,” Fish said in a statement released Thursday by the American Tennis Association.
Bryan won 16 Grand Slam doubles championships with his twin brother, Mike, and a member of Team USA. It won the Name Davis Cup in 2007. It competed in the Davis Cup from 2003 to 2020.
In March, Bryan assumed a Fish training position for a Davis Cup qualifying victory over Colombia.
Frances Tiafoe, who will play in the semifinals of the US Open on Friday, is expected to be part of the U. S. team that will face Great Britain, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in Glasgow from Sept. 13-18. The other members of the American roster are Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Jack Sock and Rajeev Ram.
The matches at the organizational level will take place in Bologna, Italy; Valencia, Spain; and Hamburg, Germany.
The organization’s two most sensible organizations will qualify for the Davis Cup final in Malaga, Spain, from November 22-27.
