On 20 November, Delhi’s chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal, said cases in the nation’s capital have increased in recent days, a blockade is not the solution to prevent the spread of the disease.

“Blocking is not a solution. It only delays the spread of infection. Each government will need to evaluate its fitness infrastructure before enforcing the blockade. We have two challenges. We will have to fight COVID-19 and we will have to stimulate the economy,” KejriwalArray said at the Hindustan Times leadership summit.

Kejriwal also said there was no complacency after the first wave of COVID-19 infections in Delhi.

“We do not convert COVID beds into non-COVID beds. If we had been complacent, we would have. We waited. But we didn’t expect the moment and the third wave,” Kejriwal said, even when the Delhi High Court on November 19, the government of the Aam Aadmi party (AAP) stopped at COVID-19 standards.

“You (the Delhi government) have seen from 1 November which way the wind was blowing. But now they’re fitting a turtle because we asked them questions. The bell rang loud and transparent when the numbers spiraled up. Even when you saw the stage deteriorating?”the court said.

Kejriwal, in his comments, also said the government had received “positive indicators” in days.

“In the last few days, we’ve been getting indicators. Don’t make headlines that Kejriwal said the third wave had subsidised him down. But the positivity rate fell from 15% to 10%. The Center has cooperated very much to get to this situation,” HT said, quoting Kejriwal.

The Delhi CM also declared that the two-month national blockade is mandatory and imposed at the right time.
