Black-owned California clothing store collaborates with Bedrock for new pop-up

McMullen, a specialty store offering apparel, accessories and home décor, will feature a six-month pop-up at 1419 Woodward Ave. from 16 September. The pop-up is associated with Bedrock, the progression of real estate owned by the Dan Gilbert company that manages more than a hundred homes in Detroit and Cleveland.

The pop-up comes as the Black-owned Californian company celebrates 15 years of activity. McMullen, founded in 2007 in Oakland, California, offers a variety of apparel, accessories and furniture from emerging and established designers around the world.

McMullen will take over more than 2,000 square feet of occupied area in the past through the Detroit-focused Dose Collective store under a short-term lease that expires in 2020 and part of 2021. Owner Sherri McMullen said she chose Detroit for the pop-up because of the city’s similarities to Oakland, California.

The brand, owned and operated through McMullen, a 15-year-old former retail buyer, touts its commitment to supporting African and African-American designers. The pop-up, McMullen’s first physical store outside of California, will feature pieces from Detroit-based designer Tracey Reese’s Hope for Flowers brand.

Staffing for the pop-up is still being determined, according to a Bedrock spokesperson, who added that there is a possibility of a permanent McMullen store in Detroit. Bedrock declined to disclose any monetary commitments made to bring the pop-up window to Detroit and the terms. of the lease. Pop-ups, while they’ve been part of retail, have become more prevalent since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic as developers look to fill the retail area that some merchants left vacant.

The Detroit boutique will feature pieces by designers such as Reese, Christopher John Rogers, Proenza Schouler, Rachel Comey, Peter Do, Aisling Camps and Mara Hoffman. McMullen is also the exclusive American store of the Nigerian Lisa Folawiyo logo.

McMullen plans to launch a 15-year anniversary collection in November, which will come with exclusive pieces ranging from jewelry and good-looking products to clothing from 15 designers, according to the statement.
