A segment of Robinson Street on Binghamton’s East Side closed after staff at a company reported a smell of natural gas.
Binghamton firefighters were dispatched to the construction of two-story billboards at 119 Robinson Street shortly before 2 p. m. on Tuesday.
Police diverted traffic around the scene while firefighters and NYSEG assessed the situation.
Part of Griswold Street, near the front of the parking lot of the Cortese restaurant, also closed.
Mark Knebel, owner of an insurance company with one in the building, said his business and a nearby salon were closed because of the herbal fuel leak. He said salon workers detected the smell of herbal fuel.
Knebel said an NYSEG crew disconnected the power line leading to the building with a truck.
Authorities said the fuel leak came from an empty apartment on the floor.
Firefighters used enthusiasts to ventilate the building. They remained there for more than an hour.
According to asset records, the building where the leak occurred is owned by Cortese Restaurant Incorporated.
