LABUAN, Nov. 12 (Bernama) — The Indonesian-Malaysian economic partnership is making steady progress, marking a strengthening of bilateral relations, Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Datuk Hermono said.
He said the value of the bilateral industry between Indonesia and Malaysia in 2022 amounted to 28. 5 billion U. S. dollars (1 U. S. dollar = 4. 71 ringgit).
However, Hermono fears that this figure could fall by 20-30% due to a sharp drop in commodity prices, particularly coal, Indonesia’s largest export to Malaysia, followed by crude palm oil.
“This year we expect a relief of around 7 billion dollars in the industry price with Malaysia.
“In September 2023, the registered industry was valued at $17. 5 billion and is estimated to reach about $22 billion by the end of the year,” he said in an interview with Bernama after the Indonesian consulate’s general meeting in Tiara. Hotel in Labuan. here today.
He said that despite the difficult situations in the business sector, the tourism industry seems to be thriving.
“Malaysia leads the way in the number of visitors to Indonesia, surpassing China, India and Singapore.
“After Covid-19, Indonesia has noticed an increase in the number of Malaysian tourists, reaching around 700,000, which compares to the number of Indonesian tourists visiting Malaysia.
“Before the pandemic, Malaysia used to send around 2. 5 million tourists to Indonesia every year,” he said.
Hermono highlighted the evolving economic landscape, mentioning the relocation of the Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, East Kalimantan.
He said the relocation is expected to increase the economic effects in Sabah and Sarawak when the capital is relocated.
“Currently, the ongoing projects at Nusantara offer new business opportunities for Malaysian investors in structural projects such as hotels, hospitals, and ancillary facilities, among others,” he said.
While Indonesia’s economy is on an upward trajectory, with a virtual transformation, Hermono said Indonesia’s upcoming elections in February 2024 have led to a wait-and-see strategy by foreign investors in long-term investments.
“Strengthening bilateral economic relations remains a very sensible precedent for President Jokowi Widodo, reflecting the commitment to foster a strong partnership between Indonesia and Malaysia,” he added.
