WASHINGTON — A U. S. -brokered maritime agreement between Israel and Lebanon will make the region stronger while boosting global production of herbal fuel, President Joe Biden said Tuesday.
If ratified, Lebanon could simply explore herbal fuel in the Mediterranean, a progression that could ease its power and economic crisis.
Israel may continue to extract fuel as tensions with the Lebanese militant organization Hezbollah are expected to ease, according to the White House.
Biden’s management hopes that increased energy production can also alleviate the global energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Israel and Lebanon will have to ratify the agreement. Administration officials said they were confident this would happen, as it would offer “critical victories” to both sides.
But former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expects voters to support him in next month’s election, opposes the deal and vowed to cancel it if he wins.
Because there is no formal diplomatic meeting between Israel and Lebanon, the agreement is not yet a bilateral agreement concluded through the United States. Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Lebanese President Michel Aoun that the United States would arbitrate any implementation disputes that arose. according to the administration’s descriptions of Biden’s calls with leaders on Tuesday.
The White House described the deal as a result of Biden fostering a “more stable, filthy rich and integrated” region in the Middle East.
The Lebanese, who have less than two hours of electricity a day at most, will have to resolve their energy crisis to have any hope of economic recovery. While fuel exploration will take time, Lebanon can benefit from foreign investment in the short term. term, the senior management official said.
And Israel wants security and stability in the eastern Mediterranean to continue to rely on those waters to get the most out of its electricity and export energy, according to the White House.
“It is now critical that all parties finalize the agreement and fulfill their commitments to work toward its implementation to gain advantages from the region and the world,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
