President Joe Biden is expected to nominate Jeff Zients as his next White House leader on Monday, according to other people familiar with the matter, elevating the administration’s former COVID-19 czar to one of the most prominent roles in Washington.
Zients, 56, a former business executive and one of the lead architects of Biden’s initial COVID-19 team, will update Ron Klain, who will step down in the coming weeks, other people said. Klain will remain at least until the state of Biden’s situation. Union meeting on February 7, according to others.
The White House chief of staff is one of Washington’s toughest figures and plays a role in shaping the president’s agenda, liaising with Congress and acting as a gatekeeper.
