Bhutan’s U-15 women’s team will play the opening match of the SAFF U-15 Women’s Championship against host Bangladesh on 1 November, coinciding with the coronation day of His Majesty the King.
Bhutan’s 23-player and 4-off-officials team landed in Bangladesh for the tournament after almost 3 years of interruption from foreign competition.
Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal are clashing this time. The trio will meet on two other occasions between November 1 and 11. The team with the most problems will be declared the league winner.
Head coach Ngawang Yangchen said: “The players are young, competent and enthusiastic to play. The point of excitement is high. I am and I hope to win the tournament. “
She said normalcy at Gelephu Academy had been going on for almost a year, but she had been taking extensive positions for the SAFF championship for three months.
The players are all schoolchildren and had to go to school in the morning and exercise after 5pm.
Under-15 captain Kelden Wangmo, 15, said: “I hope to win this year’s trophy. There are 3 groups with new players and there is a possibility.
The SAFF U-15 Championship has seven member countries. Two-time champions India, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Pakistan withdrew. Maldives participated in the tournament.
Bhutan has hosted the SAFF U-15 Championship twice in 2018 and 2019. So far, Bhutan has a good record in the league. In 2017 and 2018, Bhutan ranks third. In 2019, Bhutan fourth.
The 2020 and 2021 championships had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
