Jesse Owens, also known as “The Buckeye Bullet,” began his career in track and field and boxing at the top school, setting records in the long jump, hundred yards, and high jump. After graduating, Owens enrolled at Ohio State University to continue his victories. on occasions such as the Big Ten, the Amateur Athletic Union Championships, and the Olympic Trials.
In 1935, Owens competed in and won 42 events. His growing fame led him to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he won 4 gold medals and broke two Olympic records, the long jump, a feat he maintained for 25 years.
However, as a black man, he faced racism upon his return to the United States. He was not invited to the White House or won any honors from President Franklin Roosevelt. It wasn’t until 1976 that President Gerald Ford awarded Owens the Presidential Medal. of freedom.
