Keegan Bradley broke a four-year winless drought (BMW Championship 2018) with a victory in the ZOZO Championship last weekend with a knock on Rickie Fowler and Andrew Putnam. holes 36 and 54, on Sunday. But after bogeys on the 14th and 16th, Bradley, 36, remained calm to make a birdie the next and put the par in the last gap to win in one stroke, even though his nearest rival made a bird on the 18th.
The PGA Tour now returns to the United States to host the CJ Cup at Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina. Six of OWGR’s top 10 and 15 of OWGR’s top 20 start this week and this is the last time in 2022 with that number of more sensible players on a field.
Rory McIlroy (7-1) is the protective champion of the CJ Cup, which he won at the Summit Club in Las Vegas last year. Jon Rahm (9-1) won the Spanish Open at home two weeks ago. OWGR No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (12-1) and Justin Thomas (16-1), in addition to the Presidents Cup, last played a full tournament two months ago on the Tour Championship. Matt Fitzpatrick (22-1) made the playoffs finalist a few weeks ago at the Italian Open, but didn’t make the cut last week to protect his name at Valderrama. Hideki Matsuyama (40-1) also failed to protect a name last week when he finished T-40 in the ZOZO Championship.
Collin Morikawa (33-1), who was McIlroy’s finalist this time last year, is still looking for his first win of the 2022 calendar year.
Viktor Hovland (20-1) the closest challenger to that column for a win in Japan last week, but never moved on Sunday and finished T-5. Sam Burns and Jordan Spieth (both 28-1) knock on the door of the OWGR Top 10
The CJ Cup was originally set as an event that took place in South Korea from 2017 to 2019 and that country’s two smartest players — Tom Kim (28-1), winner in Las Vegas two weeks ago, and Sungjae Im (22-1) — are either exceptional. Along with Thomas, Scheffler, Morikawa, Burns and Spieth, Max Homa (25-1), Cameron Young (28-1) and Billy Horschel (40-1) were part of last month’s Presidents Cup winning team in Charlotte.
The CJ Cup began in 2017 and was held annually at Nine Bridges Golf Club on Jeju Island, South Korea, but in 2020 he moved to Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas due to COVID-19 and stayed in Las Vegas at Summit Club for 2021 before moving to Congaree Golf Club in South Carolina this year. The draw is made up of only 78 players and is a perfect event.
The players that make up the draw are in the following criteria:
Congaree Golf Club designed in 2017 by Tom Fazio. It is in Low Country of South Carolina (about 30 miles north of Savannah, Georgia) in the city of Gillisonville. The management takes position over more than 3,200 acres of undeveloped forests and lakes, which was once a rice plantation. The architecture has touches of Australia’s famous sand tracks, aiming to have a quick and enjoyable track. Players are on the street or in the sand, with more vegetables with runoff areas washed away.
Congaree plays a par 71 of 7,655 yards, which is the longest for a par 71 on the PGA Tour. However, he can play a little shorter with longer hitters who can cut corners in the oaks, some of which are over three hundred years old. Many shorter hitters were in the mix on the front page of the leaderboard at the exclusive 2021 Palmetto Championship held in Congaree.
The streets of TifGrand Bermuda are very wide (51. 4 feet on average, the highest on the PGA Tour) but they move away and you can fall victim to many sharp streets like those found in the Australian sand belt, with balls that plunge into dangers. Congaree’s stretches of sand are considered natural areas, so players can base their club on the front at any time. Crude oil is almost non-existent.
The course is flat, stretching only about 30 feet between its highest and lowest points, but there are some deep bunkers and large trash spaces. There is sand everywhere. There are also 10 water hazard holes on this Congaree track.
The green complexes of Champion Bermuda are elevated. Many are also introduced with slopes susceptible to sand and water obstacles. The design has some linking features. The greens average 6,150 square feet and will travel 12. 5 feet faster on the stimpmeter.
The longest par 4s are 475 (17), 490 (11), 510 (9), 520 (6) and 540 (8) yards. The 3 (360 meters) and the 15 (also 360 meters) offer risk- reward aspects. Congaree is a typical par 71 with 3 par 5s, with two in front (the current one at 595 meters and the fourth at 645 meters), while the 12th is the shortest at 580 meters.
Congaree voted Golf Digest’s Best New Private Course in 2018 and was also ranked 39th through the same publication on America’s Top Hundred Courses list.
Here are some Tom Fazio designs that have been featured on the PGA Tour:
Original:
Redevelopment and renovations:
Among Fazio’s designs/renovations, Shadow Creek (Fazio once called Congaree “Shadow Creek Low Country”) and Quail Hollow seem to have the maximum correlation with Congaree. Other non-Fazio correlations come with Kiawah Island (Ocean Course), PGA National, Kapalua (Campo Plantation), Memorial Park, Corales and Vidanta Vallarta.
2021: Rory McIlroy (-25/263); 22-1
2020: Jason Kokrak (-20/268); 100-1
2019: Justin Thomas (-20/268); 15-2
2018: Brooks Koepka (-21/267); 10-1
2017: Justin Thomas (-9/279); 8-1**
* playoff win over Marc Leishman
Note: The 2017-2019 CJ Cup occasions were held at Nine Bridges Golf Club on Jeju Island, South Korea; the 2020 event was played at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas and last year’s event was played at the Summit Club in Las Vegas.
Last year’s Palmetto Championship didn’t imply a merit for Strokes Gained: Off-The-Tee or Strokes Gained: Approach (perhaps a slight inclination towards approach), so Strokes Gained: Ball Striking combines SG:Off-The-Tee and SG:Approach.
Shots won: Ball hit (last 36 rounds)
On a track of just 7,700 yards, players will have many long irons up to Congaree’s vegetables.
Proximity gained to more than two hundred meters (last 36 laps)
Note: feet consistently gained with shot to hole.
Congaree ranked eighth among the toughest courses in 2021 for winning shots around the green. In the absence of roughness, players are faced with chips on short turf with closed lies. The many runoff spaces surrounding vegetables can cause your ball to roll 40- 50 meters from the green zone. Many of these slopes lead to spaces of garbage or water.
Shots won around (last 36 rounds)
There are 130 acres of sand in Congaree. Players will have to go up and down bunkers more regularly than average to other stages of the circuit.
Sand saves (last 36 rounds)
Congaree had about 10% more difficulty in terms of three-putt percentage compared to the average PGA Tour before the 2021 season.
Avoid 3 putts (last 36 rounds)
Congaree is designed to play in company and fast, on the greens.
Moves won at Fast, Bermuda Greens (last 36 rounds)
Sungjae Im (22-1, BetMGM)
I finished the 2021-22 PGA Tour season in wonderful form, completing third place 3 times in their last five starts, the season-ending Tour Championship.
After a successful Presidents Cup in which he was the foreign team’s most sensible scorer with 2. 5 points, he made his first start of the 2022-23 season at the Shriners Open two weeks ago, finishing seventh and responding to a slow start at last week’s ZOZO Championship to finish a forged 29th. Signing on Sunday his most productive streak of the week, a 66.
Bermuda vegetables are also traditionally its putting surface.
Sam Burns (31-1, Circa Sports)
Burns had a disappointing 0-3-2 at the Presidents Cup 4 weeks ago and finished T-30 at the Sanderson Farms Championship to win his title, but led the group there by Strokes Gained: Off-The-Tee.
The Louisiana guy has won 4 times in the last year and a portion and all the wins were in the South with 3 of the 4 on the Bermuda greens.
Cameron Young (31-1, Circa Sports)
Young had a wonderful rookie season on the PGA Tour. It started with a time finish in the Sanderson Farms championship on its third trip that started late last year, added six finishes in the top three, adding 4 more finalists, theirs coming in primary championships, finishing moment at the British Open and 3rd at the PGA Championship.
He is one of the best tee hitters in the world of golf, standing out on the circuit last season for strokes won: off the tee and third for driving distance.
However, it is the short game coupled with his strong play on the tee that can take him into the winner’s circle for the first time. Young finished fourth in the Strokes Gained: Around The Green draw the final 36 laps.
Tyrrell Hatton (46-1, Circa Sports)
Hatton disappointed last week with a T-45 in Japan at the ZOZO Championship, having already secured two top-10 finishes on the DP World Tour.
He is one of the few more sensible players who competed in the Palmetto Championship in Congaree last year and finished T-2. In addition, he matches the Congaree-Shadow Creek correlation by completing T-3 at Shadow Creek in the 2020 CJ Cup.
Taylor (60-1, Circa Sports)
Montgomery’s T-15 at the Las Vegas Shriners Open two weeks ago snapped a six-seeded streak in the top 10, adding his first two starts this fall as a full member of the PGA Tour.
While this domain is a step forward for Montgomery, it has compatibility with Congaree’s profile given that Shadow Creek is his local golf course since his father, Monte, is the general manager of the exclusive Las Vegas course.
Mito Pereira (80-1, Superbook Sports)
After a T-4 at the Las Vegas Shriners and a 67-minute smart circular to start ZOZO last week, it looked like Pereira had returned. However, he fired a disastrous 7 of 77 on Friday to retire from the race. However, it recovered to shoot 6 cents over the weekend.
It is true that it is a larger field, but now it is worth more than twice as much as in Japan.
Justin Thomas (18-1)
Thomas is a former CJ Cup winner, but he didn’t come to this golf course. Congeree in South Carolina is a giant, long golf course with some of the widest fairways those players will see all season. . Thomas is very long, but gets into trouble when he fails on the streets. This Fazio design is compared to another, Quail Hollow Club, where Thomas finished seventh, 21st, 26th and won the PGA Championship in 2017. His play with iron is arguably the most productive. on the court and play well on the grass greens Fast Bermuda and company. Chapultepec in Mexico, the site of WGC Mexico from 2017 to 2020, is also a golf course that is set in the same way as Congaree. In 4 trips to Chapultepec, Thomas finished fifth, second, ninth and sixth.
Jordan Spieth (31-1)
Another similar course in Congaree is Trinity Forest in Texas, which hosted the Byron Nelson Championship in 2018 and 2019. Spieth finished 21st and 29th in 12th and 14th in Mexico and 28th in the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. A technical distance not unusual that players will face. It’s also an incredibly sandy field. Almost as if a golf course were on top of a beach, similar to the Ocean Course on nearby Kiawah Island, S. C. Spieth ranks high in the Sand Saves chart.
Jason’s Day (70-1)
It’s been a while since we noticed Day’s face-to-face pass, but I think he has a chance this week. He finished eighth two weeks later at the Las Vegas Shriners. He has a glorious touch on and around vegetables and can still hit the tee. Like Justin Thomas, he may struggle with tee accuracy, but that shouldn’t be a big deal in this field. Day never made the vacation to play in WGC Mexico, however, he was magical on Quail Hollow with a win, a ninth and two Top 25. He also finished ninth in the 2017 PGA Championship.
Gary Woodland (150-1)
A long bomb for the player who can bombard the golf ball. With the length of this golf course and the width of the fairways, I prefer the length of this week much more than the accuracy. , 14 in sand salvos and 18 near the hole more than two hundred meters. Woodland finished twice in the top five at Quail Hollow, finished 22nd in the PGA and finished 12th and 17th in Mexico. We’ve also seen it blossom in Bermuda’s grass vegetables in the past, at the Honda Classic and Phoenix.
After Jon Rahm won the Spain Open two weeks ago in Madrid, compatriot Adrian Otaegui followed suit last weekend in Valderrama, setting a 19-under-par record to win the Estrella Damm N. A. Andalucia Masters (his fourth DP World Tour title) by six to beat Joakim Lagergren and claim a 55-1 winner for this column. Otaegui’s victory is our fourth DP World Tour victory and our 1. 4th overall victory (9 PGA TOUR, four DP World Tour, 1 LIV Golf Tour) in 2022.
Otaegui (18-1) is also on course at the Mallorca Golf Open this week, which closes a three-week Spanish tour. Rasmus Hojgaard (12-1) finished 5th last week at Valderrama and is the tournament favourite in Mallorca. Ryan Fox (16-1) has two wins (Ras Al Khaimah Classic and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship) and one moment (Dutch Open playoff loss) in 2022 and ranks third in the DP World Tour Race to Dubai standings only Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Eddie Pepperell (20-1) and Richard Mansell (25-1) have had smart seasons returning to the DP World Tour, but they’re still on their tough wins in 2022.
Jeff Winther won the first Mallorca Golf Open last year and is back to his name 80-1.
The Mallorca Golf Open was first and foremost an exclusive occasion last year that took the place on the calendar of the occasion of the Hassan II Trophy held annually in Morocco and which was cancelled due to COVID-19. Last year’s tournament was the DP World Tour’s first time in Mallorca since the 2011 Iberdrola Open.
Last year, the Mallorca Golf Open was played at the Golf Santa Ponsa in Mallorca. Mallorca is the largest island of the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain and are located in the Mediterranean. It is a popular holiday destination, especially for British and German travellers looking for sun, sand, sea and sangria. This year’s occasion moves a few kilometers northeast of the outskirts of Palma, Spain, and will be held at Son Muntaner Golf Club.
Son Muntaner opened in 2000 and plays a par 71 for 6,952 yards. It’s a design by Kurt Rossknecht, and with fairways flanked by trees in some holes and water in others, this design looks like a typical risk/reward style control. A combination of direct holes and dogleg holes will make players think and challenge themselves, the sloping vegetables will offer some challenge to the players who locate the regulation surfaces.
However, the course is short and with par 5s of 573, 533 and 549 yards, birdies and eagles will be imaginable for those who keep the ball in play on the tee. Five par 4s of 400 meters or less will also be offering opportunities.
The vegetables were renovated a few years ago, with all surfaces updated for V8 Creeping Bentgrass, allowing for faster vegetables.
As for Kurt Rossknecht’s designs, I’ve seen a few on the DP World Tour in recent years, possibly also offering tracks that are likely to work well this week in Mallorca:
Italian Open 2020, Chervo Golf Club
Paul Lawrie match 2017, Bad Griesbach
2015, Porsche European Open 2016, Bad Griesbach
2022, ’21, ’19, ’17, ’15, ’13, ’11, etc. BMW International Open, Munchen Eichenried
2021: Jeff Winther (-15/265); Golf Santa Ponça; 80-1
Andy Sullivan (30-1, Draft Kings)
Sullivan finished 11th last week at Valderrama, fifth in SG Approach and SG Tee to Green over the 4 days.
Nicolai Hojgaard (35-1, BetMGM)
Twin brother Rasmus leads the betting this week with a very sensible finish of five at Valderrama last week; however, a decreasing scoring track like this fits Nicolai a little better. Nicolai took first place last week in Strokes Gained: Off-The-Tee.
Connor Syme (50-1, Draft Kings)
Syme, a Scot, is not too far from his summer form of back-to-back finalists in Wales and Northern Ireland.
Sebastian Garcia Rodriguez (70-1, DraftKings)
Garcia Rodriguez finished T-5 last year in Mallorca and T-8 in Tenerife. He finished momentarily in Cádiz in 2019 on the Challenge Tour, so the Spaniard faces the home games.
Sébastien Soderberg (100-1, Bet Rivers)
Soderberg has missed six of his last 8 cups and finished T-2 last year in Mallorca.
Niklas Lemke (130-1, Kings Draft)
Lemke T-7 last year in Mallorca and has done well in Spain before with a T-4 in the Spanish Challenge on the Challenge Tour in 2018.
A numbers game: Be sure to include quarterback settings in your own numbers handicap games this week. That’s it. Cooper Rush to Dak Prescott.
Follow the cash: If you like a underdog, bet a giant percentage of one unit on the spread and a small percentage on the cash line.
