Head coach Ives Serneels said Belgium’s historic victory is a highlight of her career after reaching the quarter-finals of the Women’s European Championship for the first time with a 1-0 win over Italy.
Tine De Caigny sent the Red Flames in with a calm shot at half-time, with the Belgian defence keeping an emboldened Italian attack at bay for seven minutes of extra time.
Serneels’ attention will soon turn to his team’s difficult match on Friday against Group C winners Sweden, but he took the time to savor the magical moment after the final whistle.
“This is a historic night for Belgian women’s football,” she said.
“I’ve had a lot of smart moments in my career, but it’s up there. This could be the most productive time yet. It took me a long time: I have been with the Belgian women’s national team for 11 years. So I’m very happy that we’re going to the quarter-finals!
His counterpart expressed sadness after an attack that saw Italy create many opportunities at the half-time.
“They gave what they had,” Bertolini said.
“This tournament has been an important party and will help us grow in the future. “
