A goal from Youri Tielemans after 73 seconds and a late goal from Kevin De Bruyne gave Belgium a 2-0 win over Romania in a run of chances on Saturday that saw a final circular clash with all four of the three teams in Group E. . points.
It was a Saturday night special played in an incredible atmosphere in Cologne, the only mystery being that there were only two goals.
All the effects will now be seen on the final night of matches, when Belgium face Ukraine and Slovakia face Romania, where four points may be enough to finish off the best in the group, but they can also see a team eliminated.
Belgium, who are still ranked third in the world according to FIFA, were unrecognisable among the slow squad, surprising through Slovakia in their opening match, pouring in and full of power from the first whistle.
It paid off when Romelu Lukaku held the ball with his back to goal before firing it to Tielemans, who controlled a clean, low shot.
Four minutes later, Romania came close thanks to a header from Radu Dragusin that Koen Casteels took advantage of, but it was a brief respite as Belgium took charge of the exhibition in the first half.
Dodi Lukebakio’s ferocious shot was well saved by Florin Nita after a goal carving executed by De Bruyne, while Lukebakio and Amadou Onana shone when they were loose in front of goal.
It was only a matter of time before they scored again, but Romania withstood the typhoon and, knowing how devastating their counter-attacks had been to beat Ukraine, did not panic.
In fact, their fans kept them going, helping to create an incredible atmosphere as the noise rained down from the four stands.
The waves of Belgian attacks continued, however, when Jeremy Doku flashed in a cross inches from Lukebakio’s head, De Bruyne made a spin just past the post and then fired a muffled shot through Nita.
Lukaku thought he had secured the moment after an hour by returning home safely thanks to a ball from De Bruyne, only to be sent off by VAR for offside, five days after scoring twice against Slovakia.
The action from start to finish continued with Dennis Man scoring for Romania before needlessly firing straight at Casteels and then, incredibly, it was the Belgian goalkeeper who scored the second goal with 10 minutes to go on a league goal on Sunday.
He threw a purpose kick that eluded everyone and De Bruyne, still standing, grabbed it to bring the ball home in what could become an invaluable purpose if calculators were needed to split the groups next week.

Youri Tielemans came off the bench against Slovakia and hopes for more involvement this time, after confirming that he is injured.

“I had a groin injury that occurred when I was playing for Aston Villa, but now I’m one hundred percent fit. I don’t think I’ll be in the starting lineup. I’m in a position to play, like everyone else.
