Belgian lawmakers condemn execution of Mostafa Salehi by Iranian regime and continuing human rights violations

Belgian lawmakers condemned the execution of Mostafa Salehi through the Iranian regime and human rights violations in Iran in a letter to Josepp Borrell, the European Union’s highest representative for foreign affairs.

In a desperate attempt to crack down on the reticent Iranian society, the Iranian regime executed Mostafa Salehi on August 5. Salehi was arrested during the 2018 national protests in Iran. In his letter, Belgian lawmakers referred to the bloodbath of Iranian political prisoners in 1988. In the summer of 1988, Iranian regime officials extrajudicially executed more than 30,000 political prisoners based on a fatwa issued through Ruhollah Khomeini, then the regime’s ideal leader. Most of the victims were members and supporters of the People’s Mujahideen Organization of Iran (WIPO/MEK).

Here is the full Belgian parliamentary committee for a loose Iran:

Dear Minister, Josep BORRELL,

As you know, the human rights scenario in Iran is in a very regrettable state. The 1988 bloodbath, an opposite crime to humanity, went unpunished for 32 years, and the bloodbath reported through Amnesty International in two hundred pages.

Dear Sir, on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, the Iranian government hanged Mostafa Salehi in criminal Dastgerd in the city of Isfahan. Salehi, 30, one of the criminals arrested in Isfahan after the December 2017 uprising to January 2018. He was arrested and sentenced to death for “leading the Kahrizsang riots in Najafabad city.”

Amnesty International condemns the execution of Mustafa Salehi. The execution of Mostafa Salehi proves once again that the Iranian government seeks revenge than justice.

We would like to draw your attention to human rights violations in Iran, in particular the execution of a protester. We are seriously involved with the ill-treatment and torture of those who have been detained to sign and death sentences for protests against the regime.

We strongly condemn the death sentences that are opposed to Iranian citizens for participating in the demonstrations and call for the immediate and unconditional release of these prisoners and the prompt cessation of such hangings. We urge the High Representative of the European Union, Mr Joseph Borrell, to strongly condemn the execution of Mostafa Salehi. Silence and are counterproductive and can be misinterpreted by the Iranian regime as a gentle green European Union in Tehran to pursue human rights violations. We reaffirm our stated position that the EU’s relations with Iran will have to be conditioned through the cessation of executions and transparent progress in respect for human rights.
