Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko rejected the Western complaint Wednesday after his two main wartime parties were excluded from next month’s presidential election and police arrested more than 250 protesters.
The European Union delegation in Belarus said that the exclusion of the two rivals “undermines the general integrity and democratic nature of elections,” and Europe’s electoral control body expressed fear over the “key facets of the electoral process.”
Defending police handling of the protests, banning the two challengers on Tuesday, Lukashenko said countries like France and the United States had used more-force demonstrators and accused the West of double weight.
“Criticize (President Donald) Trump, USA, for the lack of democracy. Try to do it with Russia,” Lukashenko, 65, said at an assembly with supporters in the city of Vitebsk.
“We don’t need to tell ourselves how to live. We know how to do this ourselves. First resolve your own upheavals, and there are many,” said official news firm Belta.
Lukashenko, who has presented little dissent in his 26-year reign, is almost certain to win the August 9 election, but public frustration is developing over the economy, human rights and its handling of the Covid-1nine pandemic.
The Central Electoral Commission refused to sign banker Viktor Babariko for a corrupt case opposed to him and excluded former Ambassador Valery Tsepkalo after rejecting some of the signatures supporting his candidacy.
His exclusion sparked protests in the capital, Minsk, and, according to social media, in cities.
Police said more than 250 people had been arrested and the human rights organization Vesna 96 estimated the total in 302. Police said six police officers were injured and the state investigative committee filed an illegal case against protest organizers and demonstrators.
The security and cooperation organization in Europe’s electoral control body, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), said it would send election observers without receiving a “timely invitation”.
Expressing fear that Belarus has not been able to address past problems in the electoral process, the ODIHR suggested that Minsk take “concrete and prompt measures to protect the exercise of basic freedoms”.
