Johannesburg – The South African Beer Association, which includes the Association of Craft Brewers of South Africa, Heineken and SAB, has threatened to cut off alcohol to institutions that violate the government’s covid-19 blockade regulations.

“Following recent reports of alcohol violating Level 2 blocking rules, the South African Beer Association (Basa) is committed to identifying institutions that break the law and cut off its supply,” said Patricia Pillay, Basa’s executive director.

“Beer brands will ask municipalities and the provincial liquor government for the main business points whose licenses have been revoked since sales resumed and will prevent the supply of alcohol.

Pillay said that while outlets and peak restaurants complied with closing rules, his organization won reports from corporations selling and serving alcohol outdoors during legal business hours.

“We have also had point-of-sale reports that comply with social estating protocols, jeopardizing customer fitness and protection.

“Many South Africans drink sparingly and safely, without any negative effect on the public fitness system. But there are too many people who drink too much and put other people’s lives at risk,” he says.

“Together, as a society, we want to find a way to reduce alcohol abuse. It is that all concerned recognize the importance of moderate and guilty consumption of alcohol.”

Tourism Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane wrote this week about this breach of Covid-19 Level 2 blocking regulations, ingesting them to give up.

In a statement, Kubayi-Ngubane spokesman Hlengiwe Nhlabathi-Mokota said the tourism branch had won court cases for non-compliance, sale of takeaway alcohol, and non-compliance with physical est breach protocols.

In accordance with Level 2 regulations, on-site food is allowed in restaurants and alcoholic beverages can be served until 10 p.m.
