First, Nepal will supply 40 to 50 MW of electricity to Bangladesh, and the source will accumulate after the final touch of a mega power project, Nepal’s new ambassador to Bangladesh, Ghanshyam Bhandari, said.
The diplomat made the comment yesterday at his meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Gono Bhaban, Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim’s press secretary told reporters.
The envoy said his country is lately a mega electric power project.
“Once the task is completed, Nepal will export more electricity to Bangladesh,” Ihsanul quoted the ambassador as saying.
Bangladesh is interested in acquiring 500 MW of the 900 MW Alto Karnali hydropower project.
Bhandari also expressed his country’s interest in the land port of Banglabandha for trade, as it is closer than the port of Burimari.
He appreciated Bangladesh’s cooperation with Nepal and said that many Nepalese fellows are in Bangladesh for higher degrees.
Hasina congratulated Bhandari and confided in him her cooperation.
He recalled Nepal’s help to Bangladesh in the liberation war by offering arms and ammunition to freedom fighters, which he said was very important for the country.
The Prime Minister highlighted Bangladesh’s connectivity with the countries of the region, Nepal, Bhutan and India.
Hasina recalled the recent visit of the president of Nepal to Bangladesh under the Mujib Borsho program, saying that it has given new impetus to bilateral relations.
In a separate meeting with Prime Minister in Gono Bhaban, Iran’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Mansour Chavoshi, said his country will assist Bangladesh in the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya, Myanmar’s forcibly displaced citizens, to their homeland.
Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
The ambassador praised Bangladesh for hosting the Rohingya on humanitarian grounds at the meeting, which also discussed similar issues to bilateral relations and industry.
Referring to the sanctions and counter-sanctions due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Prime Minister said that other people around the world are suffering the consequences.
Ambassador to the Sea Ziauddin and Chief Secretary of Prime Minister Ahmad Kaikaus were present at the meetings.
