For Bangladeshi citizens, India is not only a travel destination, but also a hub for medical medicine and shopping. The official knowledge to be gained through August this year reveals that 20. 8% of all tourists who visited India between January and August were Bangladesh, a slight drop from 22. 3% from the same time’ last year. The scenario worsened in August, with Bangladeshi tourists accounting for just 15. 6% of overall arrivals.
On a per month basis, the slowdown has more pronounced. In July, there was a minimize of 20. 3% in annual shift in the arrivals of Bangladais tourist, with only 1. 57 Lakh of visitors to Bangladesh this month. The figures deteriorated in August, with a sharp annual minimize of 38. 1%, bringing the figure to only 99,000 visitors. From January to August, the overall number of Bangladais tourists dropped 9. 1%to 12. 86 Lakh.
India’s tourism sector has struggled to recover fully after the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, India received over 1.09 crore foreign tourists. However, the numbers plummeted to 27.45 lakh in 2020 and further to 15.27 lakh in 2021 due to strict lockdowns and travel restrictions.
Although there is some recovery in 2022 with 61. 91 Lakh of tourists visited, the numbers were not under pre-pandemic levels. In 2023, the general reached 92. 36 Lakh. By 2024, in August, the FTA figure is found in 61. 9 Lakh, still under the 2019 levels.
Meanwhile, neighboring and competitive destinations such as Qatar, Dubai, Vietnam and Sri Lanka have noted foreign tourist arrivals exceeding pre-stop levels. For example, Qatar recorded a 47% construction in foreign tourist arrivals compared to pre-stop levels, highlighting the demanding situations India faces to regain its position as a destination.
