Avelo Airlines will add 4 new destinations to its map this summer, the first advertising flights to Lakeland, Florida in more than a decade.
The cheap Houston-based airline announced on March 28 that it would link its New Haven base to Lakeland and St. John’s. Louis on June 13. Avelo will also begin flights from New Haven to Houston Hobby Airport on June 14 and to Traverse City, Michigan, on June 15. All 4 destinations are new to Avelo.
The expansion will make New Haven Avelo’s number one base and further fuel the city’s air travel resurgence.
By June, Avelo will operate up to 18 departures from the airport, located on the Connecticut coast, halfway between New York and Hartford, according to Cirium Diio’s schedules. Burbank, California, is Avelo’s second busiest base, with as many as 8 starts. followed by Wilmington, Delaware.
The airline’s expansion into New Haven is a major change for the airport. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, American Airlines was the only airline serving the airport, with several daily regional flights to Philadelphia. Alliance airline Oneworld has suspended service to New Haven. the pandemic. The airport now plans to build a new six-gate terminal and expand its main runway to accommodate Avelo’s expansion. However, the projects are experiencing delays due to local opposition.
Avelo intends to operate the additional New Haven routes twice a week, with the exception of the New Haven-Traverse City flights, which will operate on Saturdays.
The airline, with a fleet of 16 Boeing 737NGs, does not face any festivals on any of the routes, according to Cirium Diio’s schedules.
Lakeland, located about 58 miles west of Tampa and about 50 miles southwest of Orlando, will be worth more than $6 million over five years for new Avelo flights with marketing incentives and airport innovations.
“This is just the beginning of Avelo’s partnership with [Lakeland] and Central Florida,” said Avelo CEO Andrew Levy, suggesting more routes are possible.
Lakeland last had an advertising air service from scheduled charter airline Direct Air, which flew there in 2011 and 2012, according to Cirium data. Previously, the airport’s last advertising air service was in the 1980s.
Avelo reported its first pre-tax profit in the fourth quarter of 2023. The low-cost, unlisted airline generated $265 million worth of cash in the period. He did not disclose the expenses.
The airline is developing this year, especially in New Haven.
In addition to the flights unveiled on March 28, Avelo plans to upload flights from New Haven to Atlanta, Concord, North Carolina, Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida and Knoxville in May. In February, it introduced the New Haven-Wilmington service. The airline’s plans call for flying to 21 destinations from New Haven.
In addition, Avelo applied to the U. S. Department of Transportation on March 22 for authorization to release scheduled flights to the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
Avelo’s capacity will increase approximately 13% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2024, according to Cirium Diio’s schedules.
