Earlier this summer, Bruce Pearl made headlines in the Jewish media with his “Birthright for College Basketball” excursion to Israel.
The Jewish head coach brought his predominantly black Auburn University men’s basketball to his people’s homeland, where they participated in anti-Israeli exhibition games, held a basketball clinic with Tamir Goodman, the “Jewish Jordan,” and visited historic sites.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency described it as “a 10-day Birthright-style trip. “Pearl called it a way to bring other people together and, since ESPN broadcast the games, an “infomercial for Israel. “
On September 13, Pearl, one of the biggest names in school basketball, will travel to Philadelphia to communicate about the trip.
The coach, who led Auburn to the SEC Regular Season Championship in 2022 and the Final Four in 2019, will be the keynote speaker at the fifth annual Athletes’ Gala Against Anti-Semitism on Hilton City Avenue. The occasion is a fundraiser for Stand with Us, a nonprofit that promotes a pro-Israel calendar and fights anti-Semitism, according to Paula Joffe, its director for the Mid-Atlantic region.
Pearl also sits on the advisory board of the Alliance of Trust, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that seeks to “improve black-Jewish relations through systems to combat racism and anti-Semitism,” according to its website. Stand with Us is a sponsor of the Alliance of Trust’s educational series on games to combat racism and anti-Semitism, said David Edman, co-founder of Alliance.
“I will open my heart. There are a lot of things that bring the black and Jewish communities closer together,” Pearl said. “One of the main ones is that we survived slavery. “
Pearl took his players to Israel because he was looking for them to see that there was not much difference between his devout upbringing and theirs in the Christian faith. The organization saw Jewish and Christian sites.
It’s a concept the coach developed when he led the U. S. men’s basketball team. He won a gold medal at the 2009 Maccabiah Games. But because of COVID and other events, the timing was never right, he said.
In 2022, however, this was despite the whole case.
“I’m a basketball coach. I try to bring other people together. Israel, Jerusalem, gather everyone. Don’t separate us,” Pearl said. “We started anything here. “
Pearl works with a company called Creative Sports Marketing to bring more groups to the Holy Land in the future. He hopes to make a stopover in the UAE to teach a lesson about the Abraham Accords, the 2020 treaty organized by the United States.
