At least 20 in bus accident in Colombia

At least 20 other people were killed and 15 others injured when a bus overturned on the Pan-American Highway in southwestern Colombia.

The bus was traveling between the port city of Tumaco in Colombia’s southwest corner and Cali, two hundred miles (320 km) northeast when the incident occurred Saturday.

“Unfortunately we have a death toll of 20,” said Capt. Albertland Agudelo, of the Traffic Police of the Nariño Department.

Among the injured were a three-year-old woman and an eight-year-old boy.

Investigators are investigating imaginable “mechanical brake system disorder,” Col. Oscar Lamprey, director of traffic and shipping in the area, said in a message to reporters.

An initial report indicates that the motive force lost force after exiting a curve in a foggy area. It took police and fire service rescuers nine hours to right the vehicle, evacuate the injured and recover the dead.
